WEEKLY SURF REPORT
August 24, 2008

National Forecast
Caribbean Coast - Flat all week. Great snorkeling and diving conditions.

Pacific Coast - The waves from the south drop from overhead on Sunday down to head high Monday and stay small Tuesday. On Wednesday afternoon the first overhead sets from a SW swell fill in, with a period of 16 seconds, and these waves will affect the Nicoya Peninsula, too. This swell has a mix of SSW in it that will create a lot of set waves in the 1-2 feet overhead range on Thursday and Friday. Waves will reach 3 feet overhead when the swell peaks on Saturday and then by Sunday it drops back to a foot overhead.

The Long Shot - The next Southwest swell arrives late Wednesday (9/3) with surf in the 1 foot overhead range. Another more powerful SW should arrive a week later (9/10) bringing double overhead sets if it keeps its fetch and angle.

Tamarindo Report
** From Rafael at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
WRSC is offering their Tiki rooms for only $49 per night during September and October. Also, their new boat, the Holly Glee 2, will be available for boat trips to Witchs/Ollies for $90 per person, $300 for the whole boat (max 5 guests), or only $450 with shuttle service to and from Playa de Coco.

Playa Grande Report (August 17)
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande-
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: In spite of the dismall predictions for surf here in Playa Grande, the swell has hovered around head high all week and has produced good surf when the wind cooperated, especially at the beginning of the week.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The high tides are in afternoon and as we move into our pre-rainy season, the chances for off shores are diminishing. The small swell has nice shape and only needs wind. Our perfect, classic, conditions are becoming rarer as the thunder storms move in.

Playa Negra Report
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We've been having lots of unsettled weather here at Playa Negra. The surf has been small and inconsistent with fair to poor shape. Water temp is 84 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): For the surf, look for more small stuff through the weekend and into next week. A change comes mid week when a new SW kicks in for head high plus waves. For the weather, look for more rainy weather at all times during the day. Sometimes the wind turns offshore just after a heavy downpour. Check it right after it rains.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have the high tide running through the mornings this week and that means Playa Negra early will be your best bet. There might not be much but it will be better there than anyplace else.
